The impact of digital consultations on the mental health and wellbeing of FCPs

Data from our FRONTIER study show that staff are reportedly feeling additional stress and burnout as a result of undertaking digital consultations. Other work has also acknowledged that digital working models may increase staff workload particularly in areas of high deprivation when language and/or health literacy impact consultations.

We are therefore conducting further work within FRONTIER that will investigate the current mental health and wellbeing issues experienced by FCPs using digital consultations with a view to inform future work to enhance workforce support. This will involve a mixed methods study with a nationwide e-survey to scope the current issues being experienced. This survey will be followed by in-depth qualitative interviews to further understand the key aspects identified, particularly in GP practices in areas of high socioeconomic deprivation.
